Who I am and what I do
My name is Jacqueline Hill. I founded J Hill Associates in 2004 to make a positive difference by supporting those actively working to make the world a better place. I focus on what I am good at; leadership coaching, change mentoring and connecting people with good ideas and each other. I have over 25 years’ experience in different sectors and countries, in senior management and consulting roles.
My coaching style incorporates working with clients’ values, identity, and beliefs to effect lasting, positive change. I also offer personal and organisational change management mentoring, offering relevant resources and support for clients to apply these within their own context.
I draw on a variety of practical coaching methods and models:
- Providing the structure and process that allows you to think freely
- Listening, questioning and challenging as you explore who you are, how you are, and where you want to be
- Openly sharing with you tools and techniques that you can adapt and use for yourself
- Enabling you to discover more about yourself and your impact on others
- Supporting you to follow the paths you wish to explore and to achieve your aims.
My coaching and mentoring are informed by significant experience in cross-cultural organisation, leadership and team development.
I focus on personal development, either 1:1 or in small groups. My colleagues in the J Hill Associates network provide specialist support in other areas such as team coaching and organisational development.
It is your quest. My coaching acts as a catalyst; uncovering your potential, guiding and supporting you to:
- Make major change happen for yourself and your organisation
- Unleash your potential despite challenging circumstances
- Create clarity from confusion and complexity, taking control of your own personal development
- Speak up for yourself, ensuring your needs are met.

How I got here
I was inspired to found J Hill Associates in 2004 following a year as a strategic planning advisor for a local NGO in Bangladesh. It felt like my whole career had been leading up to this.
My degree in Information Technology led to my first job as an analyst programmer, followed by sales and marketing roles in the oil and chemicals and banking sectors for an international decision support software company. After 4 years I joined a client organisation heading up a team delivering management information to foreign exchange traders in a bank.
Headhunted to join a start-up software company, I spent the next couple of years leading teams developing customer and partnership relationships. After completing a company-sponsored post-graduate programme in leadership at Cranfield University I took on various leadership roles then became a management consultant with the Hay Group (now Korn Ferry).
Over the following six years I experienced a huge range of developmental diagnostic tools and feedback on personality, leadership styles, motives, behaviours, and emotional intelligence. I applied that learning to leadership development and change management work with clients and in leading the turn-around of a survey production team; a huge opportunity for my own leadership development. I made loads of mistakes, but we created a profitable business that we could all be proud of, and I learned lessons that have informed my leadership ever since.
I then experienced my first career cross-roads and first work with a coach. She helped me to get in touch with my values and identify my personal purpose. As a result, I arranged a sabbatical year from Hay Group, and volunteered as a strategic planning advisor for a small not-for-profit organisation in Bangladesh. This was a life-changing experience. I learned so much about myself, and about living and working with people who hold very different world views to mine.
I realised that I could contribute best by sharing my skills with those actively working to make the world a better place. Many wonderful friends and a supportive family, mentor and employer helped me to set up my own business, consulting in the sector that had given me so much. In 2004 I founded J Hill Associates.
Early J Hill Associates projects included:
- Strategic planning: Supported organisations to develop strategic plans and priorities for business and operational planning, providing recommendations for capacity development.
- Change management: Mentored change leaders to put in place change programme plans, structures and resources. Trained change programme teams using robust change models and frameworks to transfer skills and knowledge and support strategic organisational change. Facilitated change workshops and 1:1 conversations in situations where the confidentiality and objectivity of an external consultant was critical to success.
- Team effectiveness: Supported teams to work more effectively across geographical, time and cultural boundaries.
- Learning and development: Developed and delivered blended learning frameworks and associated programmes in leadership development and performance management.
I also re-volunteered, this time in Namibia, where my colleagues taught me much about the impact of occupation and apartheid, and how I as a white European was viewed in that context. It was a humbling and at times painful experience.
Over time my consulting clients started to ask if I would also coach them. I knew what professional coaching looked and felt like from my experience of being coached. I also knew that it took significant training and ongoing investment. Training in 2009 taught me a huge amount, not just about coaching but about myself. I joined and became accredited by the International Coach Federation (ICF), found a mentor supervisor and created a plan for my continuous professional development.
I now focus on personal development, either 1:1 or in small groups and my colleagues in the J Hill Associates network provide specialist support in other areas such as team coaching and organisational development.
